Chemistry

If you want to learn to think analytically and solve problems by applying knowledge of matter and its properties to practical situations, you may benefit from a chemistry major, minor, or teaching chemistry major.

Transylvania offers excellent facilities for chemistry students to conduct research. The University's modern, well-equipped laboratories include such devices as a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer, a gas chromatograph, infrared and ultraviolet spectrophotometers, an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, a polarograph, and a mass spectrometer.

As a chemistry major, you may participate in a special program or internship at a research institution such as the Oak Ridge or Argonne national laboratories, or you may do an independent study project during May term.

You may become a member of Transylvania's chapter of the American Chemical Society and, if you qualify, the Science Honorary.

A bachelor's degree in chemistry provides a good foundation for a career in biochemistry, chemical engineering, environmental science, medicine, or other health care areas. Most chemists are employed in the private sector, particularly in industry, where they develop and improve products and processes. Government also employs chemists in medical, agricultural, and other research. Other chemists teach at the high school or college level. To teach chemistry in college, an advanced degree is required.
