Mathematics

Mathematics is essential to almost every discipline. If you have good reasoning ability, persistence, and the ability to apply basic principles to problems, you may excel in math.

Transylvania offers a mathematics major and minor. Our curriculum is designed to prepare you for graduate school as well as provide the quantitative skills needed for other majors. There is much cooperation between the math program and other programs at the University, and classes can be arranged to accommodate your particular career interests. Our faculty will assess your math skills and help you plan your major.

Some mathematicians are involved in theoretical, or pure math, while others apply theories and techniques to solving problems in government or the private sector. Mathematicians are employed in actuarial science, economics, finance, engineering, operations research, statistics, data processing, and other areas. Although a doctorate is required for most college teaching positions, students with a master's or bachelor's degree may find jobs in related occupations. Having a second major or a minor in computer science is particularly helpful, since many advanced mathematical computations use a computer.
