Music

As a music student at Transylvania, you can expect solid instruction in traditional theory and ear-training, plenty of chances to perform, and studio instruction from some of the finest musicians available.

If you major in music, you will choose a concentration in applied music (instrumental, keyboard, or vocal), music education, or music technology. As an applied music major, you may concentrate on harp, guitar, voice, or any orchestral, band, or keyboard instrument. The music education major will prepare you for a career in primary and secondary music education. Introduced in 2006, the music technology major will teach you to manipulate music in digital form with either computers or electronic instruments, preparing you for graduate study in the field or a career in areas such as studio engineering and software development.

Private instrumental and vocal instruction is an integral part of the program as well as instruction in composition and analysis. The music department provides an extensive staff composed of full-time professors complemented by adjunct professors who specialize in different areas of music.

Participation in various musical groups can also give you valuable experience in the field. You may perform with the Transylvania Choir, the Transylvania Concert Band, or the Chamber Orchestra, or various ensembles such as the Madrigal Singers, the Jazz Ensemble, and the Pep Band.
